A passenger rescued from a U.S. Airways jet that went down in the Hudson River off New York City on Thursday told CNN he believed all of those on board got out of the plane safely, according to a Reuters report.

US Airways confirmed that flight 1549 bound for Charlotte was involved in an accident and would issue more information as soon as possible.

The plane has crashed into the Hudson River, sending passengers fleeing for safety in the frigid waters.

Local commuter ferries are assisting in the rescue of passengers in the frigid waters of the Hudson.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Laura Brown says the US Airways Flight 1549 had just taken off from LaGuardia Airport enroute to Charlotte, N.C., on Thursday when the crash occured in the river near 48th Street in midtown Manhattan.

The pilot, who was flying an Airbus 320 reported hitting a flock of geese, which led to him having difficulty managing the plane, and ultimately made the decision to go down into the river, according to federal officials.
